Are Church Covenants Scriptural?

The doctrine of the Nicolaitans has been a scourge within Christianity from the beginning. The apostle John recorded this in The Apocalypse, which tells us the Nicolaitans had a teaching that God hated.

We believe their name tells us what that practice was. Looking at the name itself, we see a compound word made up of two words: 1.) Nico, which means conqueror and 2.) Laitan, which is where we get our English word for laity or laymen [not clergy].

Fairly straight-forward. We see in the combining of these two words a word that means conqueror of the laity...clergy over laity,...which thing, the Bible says, Jesus vehemently hates

Quote: The scholars of those [ancient] days thought learning should be confined to a select few; it was, in their view, dangerous to put the Bible into a language the common people could understand, especially womenHenry de Knyghton, a learned monk of that day, said: "This Master John Wiclif hath translated the gospel out of Latin into English, which Christ had intrusted with the clergy and doctors of the Church that they might minister it to the laity and weaker sort, according to the state of the times and the wants of men. But now the gospel is made vulgar and more open to the laity, and even to women who can read, than it used to be to the most learned of the clergy and those of the best understanding." Unquote.

Sadly, the practice of clergy over laity continues to plague the Christian community today through unscriptural, hierarchical, church covenants and bylaws, and brethren...this should not be so.
