Battered Mothers Custody Conference

In just a few weeks, I will be attending the annual Battered Mothers Custody Conference in Albany, NY with two women who are currently engaged in custody battles with their former batterers.

Since it is usually the mother who has temporary custody of the children when a couple separates, what does the father have to lose in suing for custody? The mother, on the other hand, stands to lose a great deal.

There are many cases in which parents separate and fathers, out of a sincere desire for what is best for their children, sue for custody or joint custody. But such unselfish motives not the case with wife-beaters. Men who beat their wives are certainly not taking into account the immeasurable harm they are inflicting on their children who witnesses to the violence.

Wife-beaters are much more likely to use the court systems in a last-ditch effort to abuse their victims and not from an unselfish desire for their children's happiness and best interest.
