You Can't Get Saved by Just Saying a Prayer

 Titus 3:5-7
Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to his mercy he saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life [1]

[1] Commentary on Titus 3:5-7… Believers are derisively told [by some], “You can’t get saved by just saying a prayer.” That is true. But neither can we be saved unless we say a prayer. It all begins with a cry from our hearts, a prayer. The infallible Word of God says so in John 3:3, 16 and Romans 10:9-10,13.

The scriptures say we must call on the Name of the Lord to save us from our sins. That is a prayer. That is the prayer uttered from a heart of faith and repentance that saves us.

Though obedience is part of our faith-walk, salvation of our souls is not something we achieve gradually or earn through obedience to Bible commands Ephesians 2:8-9. Jesus said “You must be Born Again.” John 3:3

Salvation happens in that moment of time when we are Born Again, when God saves us “by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” Titus 3:1. We read in scripture that the Holy Spirit baptizes us into the Body of Christ 1 Corinthians 12:13.

If we are not members of the Body of Christ, then we are not saved.

Putting John 3:3 together with Romans 10:9-10,13, Titus 3:1, and 1 Corinthians 12:13, we see that Eternal Life can only be attained by being Born Again, by calling on the name of the Lord to save us, by believing in our hearts and confessing with our mouths that Jesus rose from the dead. That is prayer. And when we pray that prayer, God promises to hear us and regenerate us [translate us from death to life] by washing us clean from our sins and renewing us by the power of the Holy Spirit, who baptizes us into the Body of Christ…the very moment we believe.

Eternal Life happens in a moment of time when our faith connects with our Creator…and it all begins with a heart-cry, a prayer. So I ask, Have you called on God to save you through faith in his Risen Son? Have you been Born Again?
